 Movie Mania 2009-10

Fridays at 7:30 PM in 205 White Hall on the campus of Emory University

November 13, 2009   "Into the Wild" (2007)  We begin the season with a film that started at Emory and will even include some campus scenes.  Emile Hirsch stars as an idealistic student who travels to Alaska and chronicles what he learns along the way.  Based on a true story, Sean Penn was the director, and our discussants, who are also from Emory, will be Dr. Paul Trudeau and Dr. Ed Leader.

December 4, 2009  "Gran Torino" (2008)  Finally, we bring Clint Eastwood to Movie Mania!  In one of his best performances, he stars and directs this film about an aging Korean War veteran who is trying to reconcile different ages and races in his world.  Dr. Ephi Betan from the Psychology Department at Argosy University/Atlanta will be our discussant.

January 22, 2010  "Shoot the Messenger" (2006)  For MLK week, we will be presenting this film on race and racial stereotyping.  It takes place in London, stars David Oyelowo, and has been described as bold, provocative, and controversial.    Our discussant, Dr. Thaddeus Ulzen, will be coming over from the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, where he is the Chairman of Psychiatry and acting Dean.

February 12, 2010  "Pink Floyd-The Wall" (1982)   Based on the British rock group's 1997 rock opera album, "The Wall," this is a film about a rock star who is very successful and haunted by his childhood memories, causing him a sense of isolation and alienation.  Our discussant is Dr. Steven Jaffe.  He is on the Emory faculty in Psychiatry and has specialized in his work with adolescents.

February 26, 2010  "The Reader" (2008)  Post-war Germany is the location of this film, which looks at truth and reconciliation during a complicated time for the country and its citizens.  Kate Winslet won an Oscar for her leading role.  Our discussant is Dr. Yudit Jung, who will present a psychoanalytic understanding and may have some personal reflections to add.

March 12, 2010  "Eve's Bayou" (1997)  The imperfections of a family that lives in southern Louisiana and a child's desire for repair are the ingredients for this film.  Included are the mysteries and richness that go with Creole life.  Our discussant is Dr. Shannon Croft from Georgia Institute of Technology, who has a special interest in the psychological life of children.

March 26, 2010  "Juno" (2007)  Funny and quirky, this film is about a young woman who is growing up –fast.  It won one Oscar and was nominated for another.  It abounds with coolness and hip, but underneath remain the elements of human character.  For this final film of the season, Charles A. Zapf, MD will serve as the discussant to present a psychoanalytic perspective.
